Cold process in depth
Cold process soap is made by mixing lye water with oils at a temperature where both are fluid — typically 40–50°C. A stick blender emulsifies the mixture to "trace" (where it thickens like a thin pudding), at which point colorants, fragrance, and additives are mixed in before pouring into molds.
The molds are insulated for 24 hours to encourage saponification, then the bars are cut and placed on curing racks. During the 4–6 week cure, residual water evaporates, the bar hardens, and the pH drops from caustic to skin-safe. The long cure is not optional — it is the step that makes the soap safe and hard.
CP allows the most design freedom: swirls, layers, embeds, and detailed surface decoration are all possible because the soap is poured at a fluid consistency and solidifies in the mold.
Hot process in depth
After reaching trace, HP soap batter is cooked until saponification is complete. In a slow cooker, this takes 45–90 minutes, with the batter going through distinct phases: liquid, applesauce, mashed potato, and finally a glossy, translucent stage that indicates full saponification. The zap test confirms it: no zap means no free lye.
Because saponification is complete before molding, HP soap is technically safe to use immediately after hardening. However, even HP soap benefits from a 1–2 week cure for the bar to harden and water to evaporate. HP soap will never be as smooth-looking as CP soap, but it has a rustic, artisan quality that many makers deliberately cultivate.
The key advantage of HP is that delicate additives — fresh botanicals, honey, milk, clays — can be added to the cooked batter without being destroyed by active lye. This makes HP the preferred method for high-end natural additives.
Does the method change the lye calculation?
No. The saponification chemistry is identical — you are reacting the same oils with the same lye regardless of whether you apply external heat.
